Nigerian forward Victor Osimhen is facing a potential ban from the Super Eagles, the country’s national football team, following a controversial public social media spat with former coach Finidi George.
The controversy arose after a disappointing start to Nigeria’s 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign, marked by a draw against South Africa and a loss to Benin.
Following these poor results, George, under increasing pressure, resigned and then cast doubt on Osimhen’s commitment to the team, claiming the Napoli striker feigned injury to miss the crucial qualifiers.
Osimhen took to social media to vehemently deny these accusations, claiming he had a legitimate injury and even offered to provide evidence. The situation escalated with a heated Instagram live video where Osimhen lashed out at George.
“I have lost the respect I have for that man (George). I have lost it all. I swear to God, I have lost it,” he fumed.
The talented striker’s outburst has been deemed disrespectful and irresponsible by many.
Former Super Eagles goalkeeper, Idah Peterside, has called for Victor Osimhen to be banned from the Nigerian national team.
“I think action should be taken, or he should be banned from playing for the national team. If we allow this kind of thing to continue, it would not augur well for Nigeria,” Peterside said. He also demanded a public apology from Osimhen to “former footballers, NFF, Finidi, and Nigerians.”
With a new coach expected to be appointed soon, the Nigeria Football Federation, NFF, is set to charge Osimhen for improper conduct, which includes a potential ban from the men’s senior national team if he refuses to apologise for his outburst. This is to essentially establish discipline and a positive atmosphere within the national team.
“Osimhen is a role model and the only way we can help the incoming coach stamp his authority is by using him to set an example,” an NFF official revealed in anonymity.
“He crossed the line with his outburst even when Finidi called him to explain he still didn’t deem it fit to retract his statements. We won’t condone that. I can tell you he won’t be in the team until he says sorry for his actions.”
