Osun State High Court sitting in Ede has sentenced one Issa Ibrahim, along with four others to death for kidnapping and murdering his father, Adamu Ibrahim, after collecting a ₦3 million ransom.
The other convicts, include Lateef Bello, Abdulrahmon Soliu, Bello Ibrahim, and Jolaanabi Saheed.
They were arraigned on charges of conspiracy, kidnapping, and murder alongside Jolaanabi’s mother, Ajibola Shared, who was later acquitted.
The prosecution, led by Moses Faremi from the Osun State Ministry of Justice, presented evidence and testimonies, three witnesses, including two of the deceased’s sons and a police officer during the trial.
Faremi also provided physical evidence such as a stool and a club found in Jolaanabi’s house in Owode-Ede, where Adamu Ibrahim was held captive.
The court heard that Adamu Ibrahim was kidnapped from his home and taken to Jolaanabi’s house.
Faremi told the court “The kidnappers initially demanded a ransom of ₦10 million, which was later reduced to ₦3 million and paid in Sagamu, Ogun State. Tragically, while in captivity, Adamu’s blindfold slipped off, allowing him to recognize his abductors, leading to his murder.
“They then killed and dismembered him, disposing of his remains in the Osun River to cover their crime. Issa, the deceased’s son, revealed to the gang that his father did not give him his birthright, prompting the abduction for ransom.”
Through their respective counsel, the defendants denied involvement and filed a no-case submission.
In her judgment, Justice Kudirat Akano explained that the prosecution had proved crimes of conspiracy, murder, and kidnapping through confessional statements and eyewitness testimony.
She then sentenced the convicts to 14 years for conspiracy, 14 years for kidnapping, and death for murder, and all the sentences to run concurrently.
