The Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS, has re-elected President Bola Tinubu as its Chairman with a unanimous vote.
Tinubu, who has been a key figure in West African politics, will serve another one-year term as Chairman of the regional body at the expiration of his first tenure on 9th July 2024.
He was unanimously re-elected at the 65th Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, held in Abuja, Nigeria on Sunday, 7th July.
The ECOWAS Chairman’s re-election was met with widespread applause and congratulations from member states, who praised his tireless efforts in promoting regional cooperation and development.
In his acceptance speech, Tinubu pledged to continue working towards the economic integration and development of the region. He also emphasised the need for member states to work together to address the challenges facing the region, including security, infrastructure, and climate change.
“I have accepted to continue the service to the great members and the great minds that are committed to democratic values and our journey in the region,” Tinubu said. “I will continue to serve our interest and build on democratic values and the structure that we inherited.”
