The Department of State Services, DSS, has revealed a plot by some individuals and groups to use the #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria planned protests set for next week to orchestrate a regime change in the country.
In a statement issued yesterday, the DSS said it has identified the masterminds behind the plot, their funding sources, and their collaborators.
According to the statement, the plotters aim to use the protests to cause chaos and violence, which would then be used to discredit the government and make it unpopular among the masses.
According to Peter Afunanya, DSS PR and Stratcoms director, “The plotters desire to use the intended violent outcome to smear the federal and sub-national governments; make them unpopular and pit them against the masses. The long-term objective is to achieve a regime change, especially at the centre.”
The DSS claims to have identified the masterminds behind the protests, their funding sources, and their collaborators.
According to Afunanya, the Service has applied “non-kinetic and conflict resolution strategies” to dissuade the plotters from carrying out their plan.
He warned that the DSS would not allow the plot to succeed, and urged those planning to participate in the protests to abandon their plans.
“The Service urges the prospective protesters to listen to the voice of reason, good conscience and patiently engage with the authorities, in the interest of peace,” the DSS spokesperson said.
“This has become important given that violence begets the destruction of lives and property as well as serves as a distraction to governance. The agitators are encouraged to use ample ways available to them to channel their grievances without resorting to violence.”
The Service also called on stakeholders, including leaders of thought, civil society organisations, and parents, to shun the planned protests and advise their followers to do the same.
“Let us all join hands to build a nation without rancour, bitterness or stained banner,” Afunanya stated.
No further details were given on the alleged plot or the identities of those involved.
