Protests against perceived bad governance have erupted across Nigeria, with demonstrators taking to the streets in major cities to demand sweeping reforms.
The #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria protests, which kicked off today, are expected to continue until 10th August.
Protesters are expressing their discontent with the current economic situation, characterised by soaring insecurity and the rising cost of living. They are also calling for accountability and transparency in government, as well as an end to corruption.
The demonstrators cut across a diverse cross-section of society, from students and youth to civil society groups and labour unions, coming together to voice their grievances.
Major cities, including Lagos, Abuja, and Kano, were ground zero for the protest. Protesters blocked roads, carrying placards with messages such as “End Fuel Scarcity”, “Good Governance Now”, and “Enough is Enough.”
While the protests have largely been peaceful, there have been isolated incidents of violence and clashes with security forces.
In some areas, protesters burned tyres, stormed government buildings and warehouses and looted shops, making off with food items and other valuable items.
Security forces struggled to contain the violence, with reports of teargas and live ammunition being used to disperse crowds. At least six people were reportedly shot dead in Niger State.
The government has not yet issued an official statement regarding the protests. As the demonstrations continue, it remains to be seen how the authorities will respond and whether the protesters’ demands will be met.
The demonstrations have already disrupted normal life in many parts of the country, with schools and businesses closing temporarily.
