Sam Momah Foundation lecture series will hold its 4th lecture in Nnewi, Anambra State, on Saturday, August 3rd, 2024, at Anaedo Hall. Established in 2020, The Sam Momah Foundation has placed a high premium on economic and political awakening through its support for education and learning, as prerequisites for economic prosperity and political stability.

The theme of this year’s lecture is, “Wither or wealthier Nnewi: Examining Educational Advances in the 21st Century,” and for this year, Dr. Oby Ezekwesili, Chief Ben Etiaba, Prof. Elochukwu Amucheazi, Dr. Innocent Chukwuma, and Prof. Augustine Odili, are some of the expected guest speakers at the event.

Speaking about the event in an exclusive interview, Dr. Tobe Momah, son of late Gen. Sam Momah, said that this year’s lecture is specifically targeted at reminding Nnewi of the global leadership that knowledge bestows. “The Synopsis for this year’s Sam Momah Lecture is a clarion call to Nnewi to re-galvanize herself as the global beacon of knowledge she was once known for. A city that produced (arguably) the first doctorate degree holder in Africa (Dr. Okongwu) is unfortunately fraught with low school enrollment figures and declining graduation rates among her youth (especially males),” Dr. Tobe regretted. There are concerns that Nnewi is depreciating in terms of quality investments in the future which may lead to a steady decline.

Dr. Tobe who also spoke on what Sam Momah Foundation has been doing since it was founded to energize learning and knowledge, also said that the Foundation has established three free libraries with wifi facilities across three regions of Nigeria. “As a Foundation, Sam Momah Foundation has established three reading rooms cum libraries in Abuja, Enugu, and Lagos, where people can come in and read or use the library facilities including free wifi”, Dr. Tobe said.

Sam Momah was a highly influential Nigerian Army General from Nnewi, who also later served as Nigeria’s Minister for Science and Technology. In 2020, he passed on at the age of 77 years. In the same year, the Foundation was established to among other things, “discuss pertinent and topical issues in the Nigerian polity”, Dr. Tobe narrated.

The Lecture series in Nnewi this Saturday will commence at 12 pm. Several youth groups and other participants are expected to be part of the conversation.
