The Nasarawa State House of Assembly has expressed worry over the increasing rate of kidnapping in communities across the State.
Deputy Speaker, Muhammed Oyanki, raised the alarm on the high rate of kidnappings under matter of public interest during a plenary session on Monday in Lafia.
He said, “Kidnapping has become a serious problem in my constituency, every day and night, people have been kidnapped. We must find a solution to the incessant kidnapping in the state to save the lives of our people. Recently, a councillor and many other people were kidnapped in my constituency. Let’s try and find a solution to this issue.”
In response, the Speaker, Danladi Jatau, directed local government council chairmen to organise security summits within two weeks in collaboration with traditional rulers and security agencies to tackle the menace.
Jatau commended Governor Abdullahi Sule and security agencies for their efforts in addressing insecurity but urged them to be more committed and re-strategise to tackle kidnapping in the state.
“The resolution of the House is to the effect that we commend Governor Abdullahi Sule and security agencies for their efforts in tackling insecurity in the state. We urge the security agencies to be more committed and re-strategise to tackle kidnapping in the state,” he said.
The Assembly resolved to enforce the State’s anti-kidnapping law and called on the people to cooperate and support security agencies with useful information that would help in tackling kidnapping and other criminal acts in the state.
The anti-kidnapping law, which came into effect in 2020, prescribes penalties ranging from imprisonment to forfeiture of property to death for anyone involved in kidnapping.
In their contributions, lawmakers urged security agencies to be more committed to their duties to protect lives and property and adopt technology to combat kidnapping and other violent crimes in the state.
