The Nigerian Police Force has confirmed the transfer of 76 suspects, including a foreigner, to Abuja for further investigation following their arrest for allegedly flying Russian flags during the recent #EndBadGovernance protests.
Commissioner of Police, CP, Salman Garba disclosed this on Monday while giving an update on the suspects arrested during the protest.
The suspects were initially apprehended in Kano State and are now facing sedition charges.
According to Garba, the decision to transfer the case to the Force Headquarters was made to ensure a thorough and “discreet investigation” into the matter “in line with the directives of the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, to all commands and formations.”
He said ongoing investigations into the protests have led to the arrest of 873 suspects on various charges, including criminal conspiracy, inciting disturbance, riot, theft, mischief, and arson, as well as the recovery of a large quantity of exhibits.
The CP announced the arrest and prosecution of 150 suspects for violating the curfew enforced by the Kano State government, as well as the arrest of six suspects linked to the destruction and looting of the Kano Printing Press.
Additionally, 600 suspects were arrested and prosecuted for various offences, including criminal conspiracy, inciting disturbance, riot, theft, mischief, and arson. The police also recovered exhibits such as two AK-47 rifles and other substantial properties looted by hoodlums.
Meanwhile, Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf has suspended indefinitely the curfew imposed on the state due to the eruption of violence during the #EndbadGovernance protests. The state has returned to normalcy, with banks and markets reopening for business operations.
