Nigeria’s senior women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, has soared to eighth place in the latest world rankings by the International Basketball Federation, FIBA, the governing body of basketball.
With this achievement, they have become the first African team to break into the top 10.
The team’s impressive outing at the Paris Olympics, where they defeated Australia and Canada, earned them a four-spot jump in the rankings.
They secured their first Olympic victory in 20 years against Australia and later defeated Canada to become the first African side to reach the quarterfinals
Although they ultimately lost to the US in the quarterfinals, D’Tigress’ head coach, Rena Wakama, was named the best coach of the women’s basketball event.
The US, Olympic champions, retain the top spot, followed by Australia, France, China, and Spain.
