The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, NAFDAC, has warned Nigerians against patronising “miracle” water, soap, perfumes, and other products being advertised and sold by Christ Mercyland Deliverance Ministries in Delta State.

According to NAFDAC, the church, led by Prophet Jeremiah Omoto Fufeyin, is using the agency’s name to deceive the public, claiming these products have healing powers.

In a statement signed by NAFDAC’s Director-General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, the agency said it received numerous petitions from concerned citizens about the church’s “miracle water” and “miracle soap.”

“The Minister showcased the use of miracle water and miracle soap on social media to heal barrenness,” Adeyeye said. “He claimed that the women would carry twins if they used the soap.”

She further explained that the products were being marketed with unverified healing and miracle claims, which led to the public seeking confirmation from NAFDAC.

“He openly told his congregation that the soap is NAFDAC-registered. Thus, the public began to visit the office to confirm the claims,” Adeyeye noted.

“The petitioners also submitted the following products from the Spiritual Ministry to NAFDAC to verify the bogus claims. The products are: Miracle & Healing Water, River Jordan Water, The Miracle Water from The Pool of Bethsaida, A New Beginning Mount Camel Miracle Water, Water of Life, Miracle Water from The Pool of Bethsaida (1L), A New Beginning Pool of Bethsaida Water and Father Smelled Perfume.”

NAFDAC noted that none of the products associated with Christ Mercyland Deliverance Ministries are registered with the agency.

“NAFDAC is a scientific organisation that is guided by verifiable scientific facts before registering any product,” the statement read.

NAFDAC’s investigation revealed that the products were unregistered.

According to the statement, “NAFDAC wishes to inform the public that none of these products being advertised and sold are registered with NAFDAC.

“The public is also being advised to stop patronising any of these Miracle products. NAFDAC is a scientific organisation that is guided by verifiable scientific facts before registering any product.”

The agency has already initiated an investigation into the church’s activities. Despite invitations, the church’s officials refused to cooperate with the investigation.

However, the ministry’s officials denied producing the products, claiming they only have a “pool of Bethsaida water which is spiritual and artificial.”

The ministry also denied allegations of using NAFDAC’s name to sell products and stated they have “never sold consumable items to the public”, only exercising their “right to freedom of religion through the use of spiritual items.”

“We also wish to state that our Church evidence on miracle claims are founded and same abound of several miracles and healings that took place in the church premises and other venues, as same constitute a demonstration of the church right to freedom of religion and biblical injunctions in the Holy Bible,” the church’s statement read.

“We also wish to state that other spiritual items are being given to the church members, partners, friends, and visitors of the church in line with the constitutional right to freedom of religion which are not subject to nafdac regulation and mandate in this regard in line with the NAFDAC Act.”

Despite the church’s denials, NAFDAC’s investigation remains active.

The agency confirmed that it had sealed the factory of Globod Table Water, a company allegedly involved in producing the unregistered products.

“I want to use this opportunity to warn faith organisations against illegal production of regulated products without requisite regulatory requirements,” Adeyeye added.
