The Founder of Olivia University, Burundi, and Pro-Chancellor of Benue State University Makurdi, Sir Paul Chukwuma, has said that the problem of governance in Nigeria is the sub-nationals. Although Nigerians mostly focus on the Federal Government when government or governance is mentioned. However, Mr. Chukwuma without equivocation said that the challenge of governance in Nigeria is with the sub-nationals. This, Sir Paul Chukwuma said when he delivered his keynote address at the Hybrid International Conference organized by the Faculty of Management Sciences, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, on Friday. Speaking on the topic, “Governance and Sustainable Development in Africa: Issues and Strategies,” Sir Paul Chukwuma expressed disappointment on the level of insecurity in Anambra State, affirming that no development can thrive without the security of lives and properties. He also condemned the recent multiple amendments of the Electoral Law by the Anambra State Assembly, which he described as “embarrassing” because manipulation of the law is against the rule of law and cannot support good governance and sustainable development.
Calling for synergy between academia and the industry, Mr. Chukwuma said that Universities in Africa are yet to take their pride of place in the continent’s desire for development. “Our citadel of learning has not assumed the elevated position it’s meant to assume”. In consequence, he argued, there has been low quality of input and as a result, “the output is also terribly bad”, he said.
Taking another guess at Anambra State, Mr. Chukwuma wondered why there has to be insecurity in Anambra State and wondered what sort of development Anambra expects under the current disturbing level of insecurity. “We cannot attain sustainable development under the circumstances we found ourselves”. Emphasizing, Chukwuma said that “one of the core duties of government is responsiveness. We have people saddled with that responsibility. The level of insecurity in Anambra is appalling”, Sir Paul Chukwuma said.
