The United States has expressed deep sorrow over the devastating floods that have ravaged Maiduguri and other parts of Borno State, causing loss of lives, destruction of properties, and the displacement of numerous families.
The US government extended its heartfelt condolences to the victims, their families, and everyone affected by the disaster.
“The United States is deeply saddened by the devastating floods that have affected Maiduguri and other parts of Borno State, resulting in loss of life, destruction of property, and the displacement of many families,” the US government said in a statement on Monday. “We extend our condolences to the victims, their families, and all those impacted by this disaster.”
The US Agency for International Development, USAID, on behalf of the US government, announced ongoing support for the flood victims.
USAID, through the World Food Programme, WFP, has been providing hot meal rations in four camps hosting internally displaced persons, reaching over 67,000 individuals in the past few days.
The WFP is also offering emergency nutrition assistance to pregnant and lactating women, as well as children under five.
Additionally, the International Organisation for Migration, IOM, is deploying an initial US$3 million in USAID funds to address flood-related needs across Nigeria.
To further aid inaccessible areas, USAID is supporting the United Nations Humanitarian Air Service with food airlifts to Borno and Maiduguri.
USAID partners, including local and international NGOs, are also redirecting existing funds to assist individuals affected in Maiduguri and Jere Local Government Area.
The US praised the resilience of Maiduguri residents and commended the efforts of first responders and aid workers.
“We commend the bravery and resilience of the people of Maiduguri and the tireless efforts of first responders, aid workers, and local authorities who are on the ground delivering essential services. Our thoughts remain with the people of Borno during this challenging time,” the statement concluded.
