In a significant development, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is poised to undertake a major reshuffle of his cabinet, as confirmed by the Presidency on Wednesday. The impending changes will be guided by empirical evidence from performance reports compiled over recent months.
During a joint briefing at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, and Senior Special Assistant on Digital/New Media, O’Tega Ogra, noted that while no specific timeline has been established for the reshuffle, the President has “expressed his desire” to proceed with it.
Onanuga remarked, “Let me tell you, I don’t have any timeline. The President has expressed his desire to reshuffle his cabinet, and he will do it. I don’t know whether he’s going to do it before October 1, but he will surely do it.”
The decision to reshuffle the cabinet is expected to be rooted in performance evaluations, as indicated by Ogra.
He stated, “The President’s decision to reshuffle his cabinet is also based on empirical evidence… the decisions that are extracted from these reviews will be used to make that final decision.”
Hadiza Bala-Usman, the Special Adviser on Policy Coordination, who heads the Central Delivery Coordination Unit, has been tasked with assessing the ministers’ performance.
The move comes amid mounting pressure from various factions, including the All Progressives Congress (APC), for the President to dismiss underperforming ministers.
The anticipated reshuffle may involve scrapping the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, with some portfolios likely to be merged or split.
This marks a notable shift from the previous administration of Muhammadu Buhari, where many appointments remained unchanged throughout his tenure.
As the country grapples with economic challenges, insecurity, and public dissatisfaction, there are rising calls for accountability and performance from government officials. Many Nigerians have voiced their frustration over unmet expectations, particularly regarding infrastructural development, healthcare, and job creation.
The forthcoming reshuffle is seen as a critical opportunity for the President to realign his administration’s focus and improve public perception.
Highlighting the need for ministers to communicate their achievements effectively, Onanuga emphasised, “The President has given an order to all his ministers… the feeling out there is that the government is not doing enough, and the government has been doing a lot.”
The ministers are urged to publicise their contributions, as a means of countering negative perceptions.
As speculation continues regarding the exact timing of the reshuffle, sources suggest an announcement could be made around 1st October.
In the meantime, ministers are under pressure to demonstrate their effectiveness and secure their positions within the cabinet, as the President prepares to implement changes aimed at enhancing governance and restoring public trust.
