The Anambra State House of Assembly passed the contentious Anambra State Local Government Administration Bill 2024 into law on Tuesday during plenary. This new law effectively repeals the Anambra State Local Government Administration Law 1999, which was amended by the House of Assembly only about one month ago. Since the new law was introduced in the House of Assembly as an Executive Bill last week, it immediately sparked controversy over suspected attempts by the State Government in some sections of the Bill to strip local governments of their financial autonomy.

The Assembly during plenary also passed the Anambra State Economic Planning and Development Bill 2024, into law after it was read for the third time on Tuesday. This is another Executive Bill which has now become law and is expected to work to some extent in tandem with the Local Government Administration Law 2024.
Also, the House of Assembly screened nominees for the Anambra State Judiciary Service Commission, during plenary on Tuesday. The Chairman of the House of Assembly Committee on Election and Screening, Rt. Hon. Chukwuma Pius Okoye, who is the Deputy Speaker of the House and the member representing Awka South II Constituency, pleaded with the House of Assembly to allow nominees to take a bow and go, considering their numerous contributions to the growth of Anambra State. This motion was sustained by the Assembly and the nominees were cleared and confirmed for their appointments. The nominees are; Dr. Ben Nwankwo, former three-term member of the House of Representatives, Hon. Victor Ezeoke, and Dr. Mrs. Ifeanyinwa Obegolu.
