The Enugu State Police Command has arrested a medical doctor, Emmanuel Chimaobi Ugwumba, an imposter involved in child trafficking.

The 52 years old Dr. Emmanuel Chimaobi Ugwumba of Ezimo-Agu, Udenu Local Government Area was arrested by police operatives serving in the Anti-Kidnapping Tactical Squad who trailed him through his publication in the Daily Sun Newspaper of 27th September 2024.

“On the 20th Day of December 2023 at exactly 11am being Wednesday, a baby girl of about four (4) years was brought to our facility by their biological parents, Mr. and Mrs. Alphonsus Aleke of Emede Village in Umuahia South Local Government Area of Abia State presenting with a lot of health complications, hunger and malnutrition.”

“They claimed to have tried their best to save the child but could not due to poverty. They henceforth decided to come to the Ministry of Gender Affairs and Child Protection Agency for assistance.”

Dr. Ugwumba E. C. wrote the above in a public notice wherein he signed as Director of OTZ of the Ministry of Gender and Social Development Enugu with phone number 09057749100.

On arrest, the Police rescued the four years old girl he publicized and another two years old girl and a pregnant woman.

The official bulletin of the Enugu Police Command signed by DSP Daniel Ndukwe, Police Public Relations Officer, further states;

“Investigation revealed that the suspect, who claimed to be a graduate of medicine and surgery from the University of Jos, owns and manages Chima Hospital and Maternity located at Ugbaike Enugu-Ezike in Igbo-Eze North Local Government Area.”

“It was further discovered that between 2017 and 2024, he conspired with an acclaimed staff of the Ministry and others at large to conduct anti-natal care and delivery of seven yet-to-be traced children from different mothers in the hospital.”

Also found in the possession of the suspect were different documents from the Ministry of Gender Affairs and unverified pest/vector certificates purportedly from the Enugu State Ministry of Environment and Mineral Resources.

Dr. Ugwumba was recently arraigned in court and remanded in the Nigerian Correctional Custodial Centre pending further hearing.
