The 2025 Anambra State Governorship aspirant on the platform of the All Progressives Congress – APC, Sir Paul Chukwuma, has charged Anambra State lawmakers with making sustainable laws for the State. Citing a recent series of amendments to the Anambra State Electoral Law 2024, as well as the Local Government Administration Law 2024, Mr. Chukwuma emphasized that the legislative arm of the State Government is not an appendix of the governor, but an independent arm of the State Government.
According to Sir Paul Chukwuma who expressed disappointment in how the two controversial laws were passed in the Anambra State House of Assembly, “at best, the House of Assembly is embarrassing everybody.”
The Anambra State Local Government Administration Law 1999 was amended in a day. Subsequently, an Executive Bill was sent to the House of Assembly to repeal the Law, and this was also undertaken within two sitting days, despite controversial sections suspected of being introduced to strip local governments of their financial autonomy and independence.
Similarly, the Anambra State Electoral Law 2024 was serially amended under suspicious circumstances, creating an impression of executive manipulation ahead of the just concluded local government election in Anambra State which failed below all known election standards.
