About 94 people have died as a result of a petrol tanker explosion in Majia town, Taura local government area of Jigawa state.
DSP Shi’isu Adam, Police Public Relations Officer of the command who confirmed the deaths to newsmen on Wednesday in Dutse, explained that the disaster was triggered when residents rushed to collect spilled petrol after the tanker overturned.
According to DSP Adam residents were scooping fuel from the overturned tanker when the explosion ignited a massive fire, killing 94 people on the spot.
“The incident occurred at about 11:30 PM on Tuesday in Majia Town when the tanker driver lost control near Khadija University.
“The tanker was en route from Kano State to Nguru town in Yobe State when the driver lost control of the vehicle, resulting in the explosion.
“About 50 people sustained injuries and are being hospitalized at Ringim General Hospital,” he said.
DSP Adam disclosed that the authorities have commenced a mass burial for the victims on Wednesday morning, with the entire community mourning the loss.
PPRO described the scene as a “horrific tragedy,” emphasizing the need for the public to understand the risks associated with scooping fuel from accident scenes.
