The Federal Government on Tuesday donated N500 million to the Nigerian Legion as part of efforts to support veterans and their families.

President Bola Tinubu praised the Nigerian Armed Forces for their steadfast commitment to tackling the security challenges confronting the country.

The announcement was made by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, SGF, George Akume, during the launch of the 2025 Armed Forces Remembrance Day Celebration Emblem and Appeal Fund at the State House, Abuja.

President Tinubu, while speaking at the event, acknowledged the pivotal role of the armed forces in stabilising the country.

He noted that the government’s economic and policy reforms could only succeed in an atmosphere of security and peace.

“No matter what economic theory we propagate or postulate, if there is no security, we cannot promote peace and development,” Tinubu said.

The President expressed gratitude to the military for their sacrifice, stating, “The challenges are severe, but you are this country’s first line of defence. Thank you for your patriotic commitment to Nigerian unity, stability, and progress.”

Tinubu further pledged that the welfare of service members would remain a priority for his administration, while honouring those who lost their lives in service.

“We came today to remember our fallen heroes, men and women who have sacrificed their lives for this country’s unity, stability, and progress. We are committed to their values… as we pass on a banner without stain to the next generation,” he added.

Minister of Defence Abubakar Badaru expressed appreciation to the President for his continued support of both serving and retired personnel, as well as the families of fallen heroes.

“Unveiling this emblem serves as a beacon of  hope and a reminder of our collective responsi  ,bility to uplift our Armed Forces and their families,” Badaru said.

He emphasised that the appeal fund would be essential in financing welfare programmes, including healthcare, education, and financial assistance for veterans and their dependents.

Retired Major General Abdulmalik Jibril, national chairman of the Nigerian Legion, commended the President for the unprecedented donation.

“With the donation, their families will not be left in the streets and will not be beggars,” he remarked.

The event was attended by key government officials, including Vice President Kashim Shettima, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbas, Federal Executive Council members, service chiefs, and representatives of security agencies.

Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, confirmed the donation in a statement released on Tuesday.
