A commercial driver is on the run after a violent incident in which he set a Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, LASTMA, officer on fire in the Mile 2 area of Lagos on Tuesday.
According to LASTMA spokesperson Adebayo Taofiq, the incident unfolded when the driver, behind the wheel of a Volkswagen T4 commercial bus with licence plate LSD 355 CK, was accosted by officers for violating traffic regulations.
As the officers attempted to arrest the driver, he fiercely resisted. In a shocking and reckless act of aggression, the driver and his conductor doused the vehicle and the officers with petrol, before setting the bus ablaze.
The fiery inferno engulfed both the vehicle and the officers, leaving one officer with severe burns. The driver then fled the scene, leaving the officer in critical condition.
“The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority has been made aware of a distressing video showing the driver of a Volkswagen T4 commercial bus, licence plate LSD 355 CK, setting both his vehicle and LASTMA officers ablaze in a brazen attempt to evade arrest,” Taofiq said.
The injured officer was swiftly rushed to a nearby hospital for urgent medical treatment.
LASTMA has vowed to pursue the driver and his conductor, stressing that anyone who assaults its officers will face the full force of the law.
“The agency strongly urges all commercial and other drivers to comply fully with traffic regulations and respect the authority of LASTMA personnel,” Taofiq emphasised, reiterating LASTMA’s commitment to maintaining order on Lagos roads in line with the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law of 2018.
