The Nigerian Senate has called on the military to intensify efforts to curb the activities of the Lakurawa terrorist group operating in north-western parts of Sokoto and Kebbi States.
This resolution was reached during plenary on Wednesday following a motion by Senator Yahaya Abdullahi (PDP-Kebbi).
The motion is titled, “Urgent Need for the Federal Government to Take Stringent Measures to Stop the Infiltration of a Group of Violent Terrorists Known as Lakurawa from Entrenching Themselves in Some North-Western Parts of Sokoto State and Kebbi.”
Senator Abdullahi revealed that the Lakurawa, a group of violent terrorists from Burkina Faso and Mali, infiltrated Nigeria through the Niger border at Illela, Tangaza, and Silame local government areas of Sokoto State.
He stated, “This violent gang of terrorists had raided and dispossessed these communities prior to the large-scale invasion of Mera, a village in the Augie Local Government Area of Kebbi State, on November 8.”
The Senate urged the military to collaborate with local communities and other security agencies to establish early warning systems to prevent further incursions.
It also called on the federal government to send an assessment team to affected areas to determine the extent of damage and provide relief to victims.
Senator Adamu Aliero (PDP-Kebbi) stressed the urgency of implementing past Senate resolutions on tackling insecurity.
“I want us to recall what happened in the 8th and 9th Senates. We had discussed extensively how we could stem the tide of banditry and terrorism. We made far-reaching recommendations and we asked the executive arm of government to implement the resolutions,” he said.
“It is still relevant for us to insist that those resolutions should be implemented. If we do so, it will reduce the incidents of banditry and insurgency in the country. In fact, we can reduce it to the barest minimum.’’
Commenting on the matter, Senate President Godswill Akpabio warned that failing to act swiftly could lead to widespread terror.
“This is the way it starts. And if it is not nipped in the bud, it will spread terror across many parts of the country,” he stated.
The Senate commended the military’s prompt response so far and urged sustained efforts to ensure security in the affected States.
