Dr. Ifeanyi Ubah, the Senator who represented Anambra South district in the 10th senate till his shocking death on 26th July 2024, has been interred in Nnewi, amidst profound grief. Till his interment on Friday in Nnewi, his death has been surreal to many of his supporters, friends, and well-wishers, who are in their numbers. He is survived by his dear wife, Mrs. Uche Ubah, four sons, and one daughter.
Ubah, whose journey began in his early 20s, moved from apprenticeship to a petty trader, a businessman of means, and an oil magnet of national repute, before transforming into a politician of renowned capability. As a politician, Ifeanyi Ubah distinguished himself when he was returned elected to the senate in 2019 with an unknown YPP, a feat he repeated in 2023 before joining the ruling APC. Dr. Ifeanyi Ubah was a man of many parts who had a personal touch with anyone who crossed paths with him and who went all out for anyone whom he believed would add value to his vision.
His funeral in Nnewi witnessed an influx of high-profile persons who came to pay their last respects to the deceased senator and extend their condolences to his family. Former Anambra State Governor and LP 2023 Presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, joined from the Church and was later at the senator’s home in Umuanuka, Otolo Nnewi. The Governor of Anambra State, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo was at the Church for the final mass. Sir, Paul Chukwuma, who had suspended consultation activities for a month following his death, was at the Abuja night of tributes organized about three days earlier, he was also at Sen. Ubah’s final Church outing. Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe was at the funeral to honour the memories of the departed senator. Also, Senator Osita Izunaso, Hon. Ifeanyi Ibezi, the DG of Sir Paul Chukwuma Primary Campaign Council, Hon. Peter Uzokwe, Hon. Ugochinyere Michael, Chief Azuka Okwuosa, Chief George Moughalu, Chief Osita Chidoka, Chief Ben Etiaba, Hon. Obinna Chidoka, Barr. Benchuks Nwosu, Mazi Afam Osigwe, the president of Nigeria Bar Association, Oseloka Osigwe, SAN, Hon. Augustine Ike, and many others, including a solid presence of the deceased party, the APC.
The finest of the business community were also on the ground to pay their homage. The Nnewi weather was calm and still as if observing the mourning mood of the people. For many, it is still difficult to fully accept that indeed, Senator Ifeanyi Ubah has departed.
While he lived, Senator Ifeanyi Ubah was a beacon of hope to many, the voice of the voiceless; a friend of the weak and oppressed. An avid giver, with no limits to his giving; an energy powerhouse that can go all day with little or no sleep. He didn’t withhold a helping hand he could offer or defer hope from those who needed it. In the end, Senator Ifeanyi Ubah’s name will resonate for many years to come even in death, because of these and more.
