Boko Haram insurgents have killed 14 Nigerian fishermen in Niger Republic, according to reports from the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF), a militia group assisting the Nigerian military.
The fishermen, originally displaced from Malam Fatori and Doron Bago towns in Borno State, had sought refuge in Niger’s Diffa region to escape frequent Boko Haram attacks. They were fishing on Sunday when the jihadists struck, killing them in the Bosso area near the Nigerian border.
“All 14 fishermen had their throats slit by the Boko Haram terrorists who operate in the Bosso area close to the border,” Babakura Kolo, a CJTF leader, confirmed.
Another CJTF member, Ibrahim Liman, stated, “They were attacked just few kilometers from the Malam Fatori on the Nigerian side of the border.”
The United Nations estimates that Boko Haram, now in its 15th year, has claimed over 40,000 lives and displaced two million people within Nigeria. About 138,000 have fled to Niger, where they rely on international aid and engage in fishing, logging, and scrap collection to survive.
