A 35-year-old man, Tunji Jimoh, has allegedly died from torture while in police custody at the Kwara State Police Command in Ilorin.
Jimoh, a resident of the Erubu/Asunnara community, was arrested over an alleged debt of ₦220,000 owed to a friend, whose brother is a police officer.
Family members claimed Jimoh was detained at the Special Investigation Bureau (SIB) of the Kwara State Police Command on Friday and denied bail.
“We had to leave the station very late on Friday, only to be called on Saturday morning that he had died in detention,” one relative disclosed.
The family suspects he was tortured to death during detention.
The State police command, through its spokesperson DSP Ejire-Adeyemi Toun, confirmed that Jimoh died under controversial circumstances.
“The state police command is aware of an unfortunate incident that led to the tragic death of one Mr. Jimoh Abdulquadri, which occurred on December 20, 2024,” she said.
“The deceased was invited on an alleged case of obtaining money by false pretence to the tune of ₦220,000. Discreet investigation into the incident has commenced to ascertain the cause, and further developments on the outcome will be communicated as it progresses, as no stone will be left unturned.”
Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun, in a swift response, visited the family of the deceased in Ilorin on Sunday.
During the visit, the IGP expressed condolences and assured them that “no stone will be left unturned” in uncovering the truth.
The IGP has directed the Force Criminal Investigations Department (FCID) to take over the case for a thorough and impartial investigation. He reiterated the Nigeria Police Force’s zero-tolerance stance on unprofessional conduct and called on the public to remain calm while justice takes its course.
