The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) is facing intense scrutiny from lawmakers over its 2025 budget proposal.
The National Assembly Joint Committee on Finance has threatened to cut off government funding for the examination body, citing excessive spending despite JAMB’s substantial revenue generation.
During the presentation of JAMB’s 2025 budget proposal to the committee, Registrar Prof. Ishaq Oloyede revealed that the agency remitted a significant sum of ₦4 billion to the Consolidated Revenue Fund in 2024 while simultaneously receiving a government grant of ₦6 billion.
This revelation sparked a heated debate amongst lawmakers.
“Why not keep the ₦4 billion and stop government funding for JAMB?” queried Hon. Abiodun Faleke, Chairman of the House Committee on Finance.
Senator Adams Oshiomhole, a member of the committee, echoed these concerns, expressing dismay over JAMB’s expenditure.
He questioned the rationale behind allocating ₦1.1 billion for meals and refreshments, ₦850 million for security, cleaning, and fumigation, and ₦600 million for local .
“You spent ₦1.1bn on meals and refreshment. Are you being freely fed by the government? What this means is that you are spending the money you generate from poor students, many of them orphans,” Senator Oshiomhole remarked.
He further demanded justification for the ₦6.5 billion allocated for local training, “What did you fumigate? Is it mosquitoes that took all this money?”
