Enugu State Government has signed the Host State Agreement with the Federal Government of Nigeria for the 23rd National Sports Festival in year 2026.

National Sports Festival is a biennial multi-sport event organized by the Federal Government of Nigeria through the National Sports Commission for athletes from the 36 States of the federation.

The game started in year 1973 as a unifying tool to promote peace and cross-cultural affiliation in the nation especially after the devastating Nigerian Civil War; “the game also serves as a development and training event to aid athletes prepare for continental and international meets.”

Signing the agreement on behalf of the Federal Government, the Director-General of the National Sports Commission, Hon. Bukola Olopade said the decision to award Enugu state the hosting right was merited as the state has improved security, available facility amongst others.

“The event will boost socio economic activities and turn Enugu state to be the centre of investment and tourism; hosting such festival announces a state to the world,” Olopade asserted.

In his response, the Enugu State Governor, Dr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah assures the FG, National Sports Commission of the state’s readiness to deliver a memorable festival promising a Games Village and upgrading of the existing stadium to world class sports infrastructure.

“Immediately the announcement was made, we mobilized our team; we are already working on revamping the Awgu Games Village and a whole lot; we have decided to deliver a brand new Games Village.”

“By the time you come here by the end of this year, you will be highly impressed; we are not just revamping, rebranding or re-equipping the existing stadium but we will build additional facilities to the existing one. We are looking forward to having a word-class experience befitting the sports men and women, making our hosting a lifelong memory and experience,” he stated.

“We appreciate the value and significance of this award. I want to commend the commission for finding Enugu worthy of being the next host of the 23rd National Sports Festival. We are going to discharge ourselves creditably.”

“We are determined to leave a lasting legacy that will boost tourism, investment and development in our dear state. Let the countdown to an extraordinary 2026 National Sports Festival begin,” Dr. Mbah promised.
