The Director General of the National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, Mrs. Zubaida Umar on Tuesday commended the Enugu State Governor, Dr. Peter Mbah for his intervention in medical care for surviving victims of the fuel tanker explosion at Ugwu Onyeama along Enugu-Onitsha Expressway.

The Director-General NEMA stated this when her team visited the state Governor at the Government House to flag off the Agency’s distribution of emergency intervention items to the fire victims and their families.

“I wish to commend you for the timely visit to the incident scene and various decisions made, including ensuring that maximum medical attention was given to the survivors,” DG NEMA said.

“Today’s flag-off of relief assistance to the victims of tanker fire is therefore an outcome of the collaborative initiative, which NEMA has put in place to support the population at risk.

“It is the collective responsibility of all tiers of government to provide support to disaster victims; hence, NEMA is complementing the efforts of the state government,” she said.

“The relief materials as announced by the Agency consist of 200 25kg-bags of Rice, 200 cartons of spaghetti, 20 cartons of five-liter vegetable oil, 20 cartons of seasoning, and 20 cartons of tomato paste and medicaments and medical consumables.”

Receiving the DG and her team, Governor Mbah applauded the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and NEMA for their swift response, empathy, and partnership in identifying with the state during her challenging time.

“The relief materials provided will go a long way in bringing succor to the affected families, and we remain grateful for this demonstration of federal and sub-national collaboration,” Gov. Mbah said.

However, the Governor noting the incessant damages done by fuel tanker mishaps in the nation advocates that the root cause of the problem be addressed.

“While we continue to mourn the lives lost and support the survivors, it is important to address the root cause of such disasters; the enforcement of anti-spill locks on fuel tankers carrying inflammable products must be prioritized,” Mbah reiterates.

“This measure will significantly reduce the risk of spills that ignite and lead to avoidable tragedies. I once again call on law enforcement agencies, particularly the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), to ensure the strict enforcement of this safety requirement across the country.”

“In the meantime, our administration is fully committed to providing the necessary care and support to those affected by the tragic incident. We are bearing the medical bills of all survivors currently receiving treatment at the National Orthopaedic Hospital, Enugu; the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital (UNTH), Ituku-Ozalla; and the Enugu State University of Science and Technology Hospital, Park Lane,” Governor Mbah reveals.

Mbah further promised to provide the logistics needed to ensure the relief items get to the victims.
