The Federal Government has raised the processing fee for establishing private universities in Nigeria from N5 million to N25 million.
In a memo issued on Monday, the Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC), Professor Abdullahi Ribadu, announced the increment, stating that the decision was part of efforts to reposition private universities and enhance their capacity to meet the needs of Nigerians.
The NUC also disclosed that it has reviewed the guidelines for establishing private universities, citing the need to ensure they meet 21st-century educational standards.
The memo detailed the revised fees, as follows: “The fee for purchasing application forms for the establishment of a private university has been increased from One Million Naira (₦1,000,000) to Five Million Naira (₦5,000,000). The processing fee for private university applications has also been raised from Five Million Naira (₦5,000,000) to Twenty-Five Million Naira (₦25,000,000).”
The NUC warned that only applicants who have already purchased forms would be required to pay the new processing fee, adding that they must complete payment within 30 working days or risk forfeiting their applications.
To that effect, the NUC has suspended further processing of all inactive applications, including those of private open universities that have not made progress or submitted any documentation for two years.
“Also, applications at the stage of submission of Letters of Intent only will no longer be processed,” Ribadu said.
The NUC Secretary said the changes were in line with the directive of the Honourable Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa.
