Following its victory, the Osun PDP commended voters for defying pressure to exercise their democratic rights.
In a statement issued on Sunday, Osun PDP Chairman, Hon. Sunday Bisi, hailed the electorate as ‘heroes of democracy.’
“Before and on Saturday, the will of our people for democracy was greatly tested by anti-democratic elements. From biased opinions to unlawful advice, the rights of Osun people to elect those who administer their affairs at the grassroots came under grave threat,” he stated.
He also accused security agents of attempting to disrupt the elections. “Everything was put into stopping the election, albeit illegally. It was a challenging moment that was reminiscent of the dark era of the military, and to our greatest delight, the Osun people rose in asserting their rights to vote and be voted for,” he added.
Bisi condemned the violence that preceded the polls, particularly an attack in Ilesa East where a voter was killed.
“We are greatly alarmed that the APC thugs wrought violence on innocent voters, leading to the death of a barber in Ilesa East, and injuries to many others across the state. What happened in Ilesa East LG is reprehensible and the assailants must not escape justice,” he said.
He alleged that the deceased, Ajilore Ifeoluwa, was shot dead by Ademoroti Adeboye (alias Germani), a known associate of former Osun House of Assembly Speaker, Timothy Owoeye.
“Ajilore Ifeoluwa was just an innocent voter, yet he was shot to death by Ademoroti Adeboye (aka Germani) just because he wanted to exercise his franchise. What is most alarming was that this incident happened right in the presence of policemen yet no effort was made to arrest the assailant who walked away freely,” Bisi lamented.
Tensions Remain High
With the PDP now in control of all 30 local governments in Osun, tensions remain over the legal and security implications of the elections. While the state government maintains that the polls were valid, the opposition and federal authorities continue to question their legitimacy.
Security agencies are yet to make arrests over the reported violence, while the APC is expected to challenge the election results in court.
