…Atiku, Ribadu join in mourning
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of renowned legal scholar, Professor Kharisu Sufiyanu Chukkol, who died on Sunday evening in Abuja at the age of 79.
In a statement released by the Presidency, Tinubu extended heartfelt condolences to the late professor’s family, students, and mentees. He acknowledged Prof. Chukkol’s immense contributions to the legal profession, describing him as a distinguished academic who shaped generations of lawyers in Nigeria.
Professor Chukkol, a native of Mayo Belwa in Adamawa State, devoted his career to teaching and advancing the study of law at Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, where he specialised in criminal law. He served in various capacities at ABU, including as Dean of the Faculty of Law and Director of the Institute of Administration.
President Tinubu noted that Prof. Chukkol was instrumental in producing some of the nation’s finest legal minds, including serving justices of the Supreme Court of Nigeria, judges of various courts, senior lawyers, and the incumbent National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu.
The President also praised the late professor’s seminal work, Law of Crimes in Nigeria (1988), which remains a foundational text for legal practitioners and scholars in the country. He further highlighted the professor’s enduring legacy through his children, including Abdulkarim Chukkol, the immediate past Acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
President Tinubu urged the late professor’s family, students, and associates to take solace in his remarkable achievements and lifelong dedication to legal education. He prayed for Allah’s mercy and eternal rest for the departed scholar.
Atiku, Ribadu Pay Tribute
Joining the fray of tributes, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar also expressed his condolences to the late academic’s family.
“May his family be comforted. I pray that Allah will forgive his sins and grant him Jannatul Firdaus,” Atiku wrote in a social media post.
Similarly, National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu expressed his sadness over Prof. Chukkol’s passing, describing him as a mentor and an influential teacher.
“I’m saddened by the news of the passing of my teacher and mentor, the erudite Professor of Criminal Law at ABU, Prof. Kharisu Chukkol,” Ribadu wrote.
“Prof. Chukkol was an impactful lecturer who shaped our youthful years as young students. When I returned to ABU later in my career, he also supervised my LLM dissertation. May Allah repose his soul, amen.”
In honour of Prof. Chukkol, the Faculty of Law, ABU, declared Monday a lecture-free day to mourn his passing.
