NewsNigeriaDeath Toll Rises to 10 in Karu Bridge Explosion

…Over 30 Injured

The death toll from the explosion at Karu Bridge, Abuja, has risen to 10, as emergency responders continue to assess the scale of destruction caused by the tragic incident.

The multiple fatal motor accident happened on Wednesday evening along the busy AYA–Nyanya axis, a major route linking the heart of Abuja to satellite towns and neighbouring states.

The area, notorious for heavy traffic congestion, became the scene of chaos when a Dangote truck, fully loaded with cement, suffered brake failure while heading towards Nyanya.

The truck lost control and rammed into stationary vehicles caught in traffic, triggering a massive fire that engulfed at least 14 vehicles.

Eyewitnesses described a terrifying scene as explosions erupted, sending fireballs and debris high into the sky.

The impact of the crash was so intense that projectiles were flung nearly a kilometre away, causing panic among road users scrambling for safety.

Emergency services, including the police, fire service, and medical teams, swiftly intervened.

Six victims were initially pulled from the wreckage and rushed to Karu Hospital, where they were confirmed dead.

However, the Federal Capital Territory Emergency Management Department (FEMD) has now confirmed that four additional victims succumbed to their injuries, bringing the total number of fatalities to 10.

According to FEMD’s Acting Director-General, Abdulrahman Mohammed, five victims died at the scene, with four burnt beyond recognition.

Another victim died at the hospital on Wednesday night, and by Thursday morning, four more had passed away while receiving treatment.

The explosion also left over 30 people with varying degrees of burns, with many receiving treatment in multiple hospitals, according to FEMD’s Head of Forecasting Response and Mitigation, Mr Mark Nyam.

Nyam added that eight bodies were deposited at the Karu Hospital morgue, while others were taken to Asokoro District Hospital and the National Hospital in Abuja.

FEMD authorities have urged motorists to prioritise safety by adhering to traffic regulations and ensuring proper vehicle maintenance to prevent such avoidable disasters.

Meanwhile, investigations are ongoing to determine the full circumstances surrounding the tragic accident.
