In yet another blow to humanitarian efforts in the insurgency-ravaged North East, a truck carrying food supplies for the United Nations’ World Food Programme (WFP) was looted by unidentified thieves in Gubio, Borno State.
According to Lake Chad security analyst Zagazola Makama, the incident happened around 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday when the truck driver, Aminu Mallam Umar, stopped his Iveco truck by the roadside while en route to Damasak, a town near the Niger border that has suffered repeated militant attacks.
Seizing the opportunity, the looters swooped in, making away with several bags of rice, salt, sugar, beans, and vegetable oil.
The exact quantity and value of the stolen items remain unknown, but the loss is expected to worsen food shortages in the State.
Security operatives visited the scene, but no arrests have been made.
The military later escorted the truck out of Gubio, while investigations continue to track down the culprits and recover the stolen supplies.
