The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has dismissed the petition seeking to recall Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, who represents Kogi Central Senatorial District.
In a statement released on Thursday, INEC announced that the petition failed to meet the constitutional requirement of securing signatures from more than half of the registered voters in the district.
According to INEC, Kogi Central has 474,554 registered voters, meaning at least 237,278 valid signatures were required for the recall process to proceed. However, only 208,132 signatures were verified, falling short by 29,146.
“Consequently, the petition has not met the requirement of Section 69(a) of the Constitution. Therefore, no further action shall be taken on the recall of the Senator,” INEC stated.
Reacting to the decision, Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan described it as a victory for the people.
“On God, it’s victory for the people of Nigeria. One battle down, two more to go,” she wrote in a Facebook post, thanking her supporters and INEC.
