The Adamawa State Government has confirmed that the outbreak of rabies in the state has claimed the lives of three people.

Rabies is a deadly virus which can be found mostly in dogs and cats spread to humans from the Saliva of an infected dog or cat and is spread as a result from the bitten animals.

The Director Veterinary Services in the Adamawa Ministry of Livestock and Aquaculture Development Dr. Bartholomeus Nyalas who disclosed this in an interview with newsmen, added that nine cats have been tested positive with the disease after laboratory analysis.

Dr. Nyalas said the ministry has put all its Veterinary Doctors on Surveillance across the 21 local government areas in the state, explained that part of the symptoms of Rabies in animals include wildness, pouring out of saliva unnecessarily, and hotness of body among others.

On his part, Dr. Amin Mohammed Suleiman, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry said out of the 19 sample of cats carried out at the Laboratory of National Veterinary Research Institute Vom Plateau State, 9 returned positive to Rabies, an indication that about 50% fifty percent of Cats may have been affected in Adamawa State.

Dr Suleiman expressed concern that Rabies may cause harm to the society as both cats and dogs are friends to human beings,  however said the government is on top of the situation.

Commenting on the development, Adamawa State Commissioner of Livestock and Aquaculture Development, Alhaji Tijjani Maksha called on owners of pets especially cats and dogs to take their pets to government approved veterinary hospitals or clinics for vaccination against rabies.

Maksha said the government is working out modalities to nip the situation in the bud.
