The Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, says the Nigerian Armed Forces have made significant progress in the fight against terrorism in the North West, with over 1,770 terrorists neutralised and more than 3,000 arrested over the past three years.
General Musa gave the update on Thursday while speaking at a military outreach programme held in Katsina State.
According to him, the operations cut across five states, namely Katsina, Kaduna, Zamfara, Sokoto and Kebbi, where the military also recovered over 1,000 assorted weapons and 12,000 rounds of ammunition from criminal elements.
“During this period, our troops also rescued more than 2,515 people whom terrorists had held,” he said.
He noted that although the Armed Forces are making commendable progress, sustaining peace must involve civilians, traditional rulers and community leaders.
“This fight for peace is not just for the military, it’s a fight we must all join. Therefore, report suspicious activities, protect one another, and guide your youths. We must remember peace does not grow in silence but in unity. Let us speak, let us listen and let us forgive, because without forgiveness, we cannot heal. Together, we are stronger than anyone; together, we can silence the sound of violence with the voice of peace,” he said.
General Musa said the recent military-led peace sensitisation programme, which took place in Batsari and Dutsin-Ma Local Government Areas of Katsina, is part of a broader “military diplomacy campaign” aimed at deepening cooperation between security agencies and local communities.
The Defence Chief assured residents that the military is reviewing its strategy to restore peace across all affected communities.
