The Kano State Government has uncovered major fraud in its civil service payroll, involving hundreds of questionable payments, officials announced on Sunday.

At a press briefing in Kano, Sulaiman Sani, the special adviser to the Governor on civil service matters and chairman of the state’s coordinating committee, revealed that 240 employees were found receiving double salaries. At the same time, another 217 individuals were discovered to be sharing the same Bank Verification Number (BVN).

Sani said the findings emerged during a biometric verification exercise to sanitise the system. He said the irregularities were identified by two standing committees auditing the state and local government payrolls.

“The inherited shortcomings in the payroll system have continued to disturb the government,” he said. “We discovered that 240 employees are drawing double salaries, while 217 individuals share the same BVN.”

The verification exercise also revealed that 1,335 employees failed to appear for screening for more than six months, raising further suspicion about the legitimacy of many entries on the payroll.

Speaking on the local government and primary healthcare payrolls, the chairman of the local government standing committee, Umar Idi, disclosed that an audit unearthed 247 questionable names. Only eight individuals turned up to confirm their employment status.

“The removal of the remaining 239 names has resulted in a monthly saving of ₦27.8 million, which will be returned to the state and local governments’ joint account,” Idi explained.

Sani assured that the government’s efforts were not meant to witch-hunt workers but to ensure that genuine employees and pensioners received their rightful earnings without facing illegal deductions.

He reminded the public that since Governor Abba Yusuf assumed office, his administration had prioritized the prompt payment of salaries and eliminated informal deductions from workers’ pay.

“The payroll cleansing will enhance transparency and efficiency in salary administration,” Sani said.

He stressed that the government would continue to work closely with relevant stakeholders to fix all the gaps identified and restore full credibility to the civil service.
