NewsNigeriaPoliticsPolice Insist Gun Licence Ban Still in Place Despite Calls for Self-Defence

As insecurity continues to trouble many parts of Nigeria, the Nigeria Police Force has made it clear that the ban on issuing firearms licences has not been lifted despite growing calls for citizens to be allowed to protect themselves.

Many Nigerians, frustrated by rising cases of kidnapping, banditry, and violent attacks, have asked the government to consider allowing responsible citizens to bear arms for self-defence. One of the strongest voices in this debate is that of former Defence Minister, Lt. Gen. Theophilus Danjuma (retd), who recently spoke during an event in Takum Local Government Area of Taraba State.

“I know we have a lot of problems, including security,” he said. “The threat will continue until we rise and defend ourselves. It is quite clear the government alone cannot do it.”

But the police are not budging. In an interview with Sunday PUNCH, Force Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, said: “We are yet to lift the ban on issuance of firearms. The ban is still on.”

The ban was first introduced in 2023 as part of efforts to reduce the alarming spread of illegal firearms. Since then, the police have warned that no licences, whether newly issued or backdated, are considered valid, and anyone caught in possession of a gun without proper authorisation could face serious consequences.

According to the Firearms Act of 2024, only the President or the Inspector-General of Police has the legal power to grant a gun licence. And under the Robbery and Firearms (Special Provisions) Act, 2004, illegal possession of firearms attracts a minimum of 10 years in prison, a ₦20,000 fine, or both.

While the push for self-defence continues to gain support in the face of rising insecurity, the Nigeria Police Force is urging Nigerians to remain law-abiding and report suspicious activities rather than take the law into their own hands.
