The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has confirmed the arrest of Martins Vincent Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), following multiple petitions alleging financial misconduct.
According to an official statement released on Tuesday, the EFCC stated that Otse was invited for questioning after receiving several petitions concerning alleged financial crimes.
Despite multiple invitations sent to his known addresses and communication channels, he failed to honour them. Consequently, the Commission obtained a lawful remand order to detain him for investigation.
The EFCC clarified that while it is aware of Otse’s public criticisms of its operations, his arrest was not influenced by these remarks. The agency emphasised that any conduct deemed inappropriate would be addressed by the relevant law enforcement bodies.
Otse has been offered administrative bail and will be released upon fulfilling all stipulated conditions, the EFCC said.
The Commission reiterated its commitment to due process and urged the public to allow it to carry out its duties without undue interference.
The EFCC’s statement comes amid widespread public interest and reactions concerning Otse’s arrest, with many Nigerians protesting his arrest on social media with the hashtag #FreeVDM.
On Monday, Abuja residents converged at the junction leading to the EFCC headquarters in the Jabi area of Abuja to demand his release. Another protest also erupted in Port Harcourt on Tuesday morning.
