Crime & SecurityNewsNigeriaSenate Pushes for Military Base in Adamawa as Boko Haram Resurfaces in North-East

The Nigerian Senate has raised the alarm over fresh attacks by Boko Haram insurgents in parts of Adamawa State and other North East states, calling on the Federal Government to urgently set up a military base in Hong Local Government Area to strengthen security in the region.

This call came during Wednesday’s plenary after a motion was moved by Senator Aminu Abbas (PDP, Adamawa Central). The motion was co-sponsored by all senators representing the North East geo-political zone.

Titled “Resurgence of Boko Haram activities in Hong and Gombi Local Government Areas, Adamawa and other North-East states,” the motion highlighted the growing insecurity in the region, especially the devastating impact of renewed attacks on lives, livelihoods, and local economies.

While commending the efforts of Nigeria’s security agencies, the Senate said setting up a permanent military base in Hong would serve as a reinforcement to the troops already battling the insurgents. It also directed the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to immediately provide relief materials to victims of the attacks.

Leading the debate, Senator Abbas lamented the level of destruction the insurgents have left in their trail.

He said, “Thousands of innocent people have been left homeless with their properties destroyed.”

He also pointed out that the return of Boko Haram in parts of Borno, Yobe, and Adamawa has crippled farming and trade. “People in the affected areas no longer go to the farms or embark on trading activities,” he added.

Backing the motion, Senate Chief Whip, Mohammed Monguno, praised the military for their continued bravery, but also stressed that the insurgents have become bolder.

“I also commend the political will and support given to the Nigerian military by President Bola Tinubu in the discharge of their mandate,” Monguno said. He recalled how Boko Haram once took over most of Borno and Yobe but were later flushed out by the military.

“But now there is a resurgence of Boko Haram again, which is sad, to the extent that they attack our military formations, dislodge them and cart away military equipment,” he noted.

Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, in his closing remarks, called for greater vigilance. He warned that complacency gives the terrorists an edge.

“There is a need for continued vigilance because, like you said, any time the fight abates and they think that the military has relaxed, they will carry them unawares by a series of attacks,” he said.

On border security, Akpabio admitted it remained a major weak spot. “Our borders are very porous. So anytime they escape from Nigeria because some of them are not from Nigeria, they still find their ways into our communities and attack our people,” he added.

With the motion adopted, the ball is now in the Federal Government’s court to take swift and decisive action before the situation spirals out of control.
