NewsNigeriaUS Tells Citizens to Avoid Nigerian Military, Government Sites

The United States Embassy in Nigeria has asked its staff and American citizens to steer clear of military bases and government buildings in Abuja unless it is official business.

In a notice posted on its website on Sunday, the U.S. Mission said the advice was prompted by heightened security concerns tied to recent global events.

“Due to increased security concerns arising from current global developments, U.S. Mission Nigeria informs U.S. citizens that all U.S. embassy employees and their families are prohibited from non-official travel to a Nigerian military site or other government venue in Abuja at this time,” the statement read.

This fresh caution comes shortly after a suicide bombing claimed over 20 lives in Gwoza, Borno State, on Saturday, an attack reportedly linked to Boko Haram. It also follows the United States’ airstrikes on Iranian nuclear facilities at the weekend, a move that has deepened tensions in the Middle East.

Israel and Iran have been locked in a back-and-forth missile exchange for over a week, with Israel’s earlier strike killing several top Iranian military officials and nuclear scientists.

In light of these developments, the U.S. Mission urged American citizens in Nigeria to remain vigilant, particularly in areas often visited by foreigners and diplomats.

“Stay alert in public places, with particular attention to locations and venues where Westerners, expatriates, and government officials frequent,” the Embassy warned.

It added, “Avoid large gatherings and consider limiting unnecessary travel. Avoid predictable routines. Familiarise yourself with emergency exits when you enter buildings. Review your personal security plans.”

While there has been no direct threat reported against American citizens in Nigeria, the advisory signals a growing unease in diplomatic circles as global tensions spill into local security considerations.
