Senator Neda Imasuen has dumped the Labour Party (LP) for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

The senator, who represents Edo South, made his decision public during Wednesday’s Senate plenary.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio read out a letter from Imasuen, formally announcing the defection.

“I write to respectfully notify the distinguished Senate through the office of the Senate President of my resignation from the Labour Party (LP) and my decision to officially join the All Progressives Congress (APC),” the letter read.

Senator Imasuen said the move was not made on a whim. According to him, it came after a series of discussions with key political players and constituents across Edo South.

“This decision follows extensive consultations with my constituents, my political stakeholders, my supporters across Edo South Senatorial District who have expressed their desire to have me enter a party that will give our people national prominence and political relevance,” he stated.

He also gave insight into why he turned his back on the Labour Party, pointing to internal wrangling that he said made it impossible for him to function effectively.

“My defection is necessitated by irreconcilable internal crises and leadership challenges within the Labour Party which have hampered my capacity to effectively represent and deliver on the true mandate of governance to the good people of Edo South,” he said.

Despite switching camps, the senator assured his supporters that he remains committed to their service and to the principles of democracy.

“I remain fully committed to the service of my constituents and the democratic ideals of this Senate,” he added.

He ended by asking that his letter be entered into the records of the Senate.

Senator Imasuen’s defection comes at a politically sensitive time as Edo State gears up for its next major election, and the APC continues to widen its net across the South–South region.
