Muhammed Babangida, son of former military president, General Ibrahim Babangida (rtd), has officially accepted his appointment as Chairman of the Bank of Agriculture (BOA), days after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu approved a fresh set of appointments into key federal agencies.

In a statement released on Monday, Babangida expressed deep appreciation to President Tinubu for the confidence reposed in him, describing his appointment as a privilege and an opportunity to contribute meaningfully to national development.

His acceptance came amid widespread speculation on social media claiming that he had turned down the role—rumours he has now strongly denied.

“We wish to clarify that Muhammed gratefully accepts the appointment as Chairman of the Bank of Agriculture, as announced by the federal government, and extends his sincere appreciation to President Tinubu for the trust and confidence bestowed upon him,” the statement read.

Babangida also dismissed the reports making the rounds online as false, malicious, and intentionally designed to mislead the public while discrediting the Tinubu-led administration.

He said, “We also want to assure the public that those spreading these falsehoods will be thoroughly investigated and brought to justice. We remain committed to transparency, accountability, and fostering unity within our nation.”

The statement concluded with an appeal to Nigerians to be vigilant against fake news and always verify information from credible sources.

Muhammed Babangida, 53, is a graduate of the European University in Montreux, Switzerland, where he obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration and a Master’s degree in Public Relations and Business Communication. In 2002, he completed an executive programme in Corporate Governance at Harvard Business School.

His appointment was part of a wider shake-up of leadership across strategic government institutions, which was announced by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Mr Bayo Onanuga, on Thursday, 18th July 2025.
