Confirms Damagum as National Chairman

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has taken two significant decisions at its 102nd National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held on Monday at the party’s National Secretariat in Abuja.

Firstly, the NEC resolved to zone the party’s presidential ticket for the 2027 general elections to the southern region of Nigeria.

Debo Ologunagba, the PDP’s National Publicity Secretary, stated that following “extensive” discussions, the committee accepted the recommendation of the zoning committee to limit candidacy to the South.

“That having retained the position of the national chairman in the northern region of the country, the presidential candidate of the party for the 2027 general election is hereby zoned to the southern region,” said Ologunagba.

He noted that the existing zoning arrangements for National Working Committee (NWC) positions would remain unchanged, ensuring that offices currently held by northerners stay in the north.

Secondly, the NEC confirmed Umar Damagum as the national chairman of the PDP, ending his nearly two-and-a-half-year tenure in an acting capacity.

Damagum’s appointment takes effect immediately and remains valid until the national convention scheduled for 15–16 November 2025 in Ibadan, Oyo State.

The committee cited his leadership and stabilisation of the party as key reasons for the confirmation.

Reflecting on his confirmation, Damagum remarked: “This gesture is not just for me, but for all of us, because I owe it to those who have been part of this journey … to the glory of the Lord, we are still united as one party.”
