A food vendor identified as Amaye was lynched and burnt alive by a mob in Kasuwan-Garba town, Mariga Local Government Area, Niger State, following accusations of blasphemy against the Prophet Muhammad.
The events unfolded on Saturday, 30 August 2025.
Eyewitness accounts reveal that the ordeal began when the victim, reportedly well known in her community, engaged with a customer who jokingly proposed marriage to her “to fulfil the Sunnah”, referring to the traditions of the Prophet.
Amaye’s response, which was not disclosed, was deemed offensive by those present.
Following this, Amaye was taken to the palace of the District Head of Kasuwan-Garba where she reportedly repeated the remarks which had sparked outrage.
The District Head subsequently handed her to security operatives for investigation.
However, before security forces could secure her, a frenzied mob of youths overwhelmed the officers. They dragged Amaye away, stoned her and set her ablaze afterwards.
Confirming the disturbing incident on Sunday, the Niger State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Wasiu Abiodun, said: “On 30/8/2025 at about 2 pm, a report received indicated that one Amaye, a female of Kasuwan-Garba, Mariga LGA, made some comments against the Islamic prophet. Unfortunately, it led to a mob attack, and she was set ablaze before the reinforcement of the security teams.”
He added: “Meanwhile, efforts are being made to ensure that arrests are effected and that suspects are investigated and prosecuted.”
The Chairman of Mariga LGA, Abbas Adamu, also confirmed the incident, adding that calm had been restored to the area following the incident.
This heinous act has generated widespread condemnation.
Amnesty International Nigeria condemned the lynching and urged authorities to conduct investigations “immediately and transparently.”
The group noted that such acts illustrate “utter failure… to effectively address frequent incidents of mob violence related to alleged blasphemy.”
