The Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, will on Monday, 29 September 2025, swear in 57 newly appointed Senior Advocates of Nigeria (SANs) at the Main Courtroom of the Supreme Court in Abuja.
The ceremony will also officially open the 2025/2026 legal year.
The Supreme Court began its annual vacation on 21 July 2025, following what has been described in statements as a “remarkably successful” 2024/2025 legal year.
In a statement, the Supreme Court’s Director of Information and Public Relations, Dr Festus Akande, said the CJN will give the customary State of the Judiciary address.
She is expected to review the Supreme Court’s performance over the past legal year, assess developments in the wider judiciary, highlight its challenges, and set out reform priorities for 2025/2026.
Key stakeholders in the justice sector will attend the session. Speakers will include the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, the Chairman of the Body of Senior Advocates of Nigeria (BOSAN), and the President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA).
Of the 57 elevated, 56 are practising advocates, while the 57th is an academic, according to the Legal Practitioners’ Privileges Committee (LPPC), which made the selection.
The rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) is the highest honour for legal practitioners in Nigeria. It recognises excellence in advocacy and academic contribution.
The swearing-in ceremony is expected to begin at 10:00 a.m. on 29 September.
