NewsNigeriaSoccerSportsPenalty Misses Cost Nigeria 2026 World Cup Spot

Nigeria’s bid to reach the 2026 FIFA World Cup came to a painful end on Sunday, as the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo) edged the Super Eagles 4–3 on penalties after a 1–1 draw in extra time in the African playoff final.

The match, held at the Crown Prince Moulay El Hassan Stadium, offered a rollercoaster of emotion for the Nigerian team and its supporters.

Frank Onyeka gave Nigeria a dream start in the third minute, his long-range effort deflecting off Axel Tuanzebe and into the net.  But DR Congo responded in the 32nd minute when Meschak Elia pounced on a misplaced pass from Wilfred Ndidi to slot home, drawing the game level.

Despite several close calls, neither side could break the deadlock during regular or extra time, and the contest went to penalties.

From the spot, Nigeria’s campaign faltered early. Calvin Bassey and Moses Simon missed their opening attempts, placing the Super Eagles under immediate pressure.  DR Congo kept their composure, with Noah Sadiki converting before Akor Adams responded for Nigeria.

Stanley Nwabali gave Nigeria hope when he saved Axel Tuanzebe’s kick. Bruno Onyemaechi and Chidera Ejuke also scored their penalties, but Michel-Ange Balikwisha scored for DR Congo to keep both teams level in the shoot-out.

Semi Ajayi then missed his attempt, giving DR Congo captain Chancel Mbemba the chance to win the match — and he scored the final penalty to seal the Leopards’ victory.
