Yobe state government has directed the closure of all boarding Secondary Schools in the state as a proactive measure to safeguard students in the schools.
The decision followed a security meeting between the Governor, Mai Mala Buni, and Security chiefs in the state, which reviewed security incidents in schools in some parts of the country.
A notice signed by Dr. Bukar Aji Bukar, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, directed the immediate closure of all secondary schools pending improvement in the situation.
Governor Buni called on the people of the state to pray for the leadership, security operatives, peace, and improved security in the country.
Meanwhile, Governor of Adamawa State, Ahmadu Umar Fintiri, has directed that all boarding schools across the State, whether public or private, should operate as day schools for the moment.
The Governor’s directive was contained in a circular signed by Dr. Umar Garba Pella, Commissioner for Education and Human Capital Development, stating that the decision was a response to the security challenges the country is currently facing.
The circular was addressed to all principals and proprietors of public and private schools, instructing them to disembark their respective boarding schools without further delay.
The circular reads in part: “Sequel to the security challenges that the country is facing at the moment, particularly with what happened to students in Niger and Kebbi States, it has been observed with great dismay that the target of the evil perpetrators is boarding Secondary Schools”.
