…Tinubu Welcomes Resignation
Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, Alhaji Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, has resigned from office with immediate effect, citing health challenges, according to a statement from the Presidency.
Abubakar communicated his decision in a letter dated 1 December and addressed to President Bola Tinubu.
In a brief correspondence, he disclosed that he was stepping aside “on health grounds,” bringing his 15-month tenure to an abrupt end at a time when the Tinubu administration is escalating national security operations.
The Presidency, in a statement signed by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President (Information and Strategy), confirmed that President Tinubu had accepted the resignation.
“President Tinubu has accepted the resignation and thanked Abubakar for his services to the nation,” the statement said.
The President is expected to forward the name of a new Defence Minister to the Senate later this week, marking what may become the first major change in the national security leadership since Tinubu declared a nationwide security emergency.
The Presidency noted that the full scope of the emergency measures will be announced “in due course”.
Abubakar, 63, previously served as the governor of Jigawa State from 2015 to 2023, before joining the Federal Executive Council on August 21, 2023.
