…Pledges Continued Efforts for Release
On Sunday, Alex Otti, Governor of Abia State, paid a visit to Nnamdi Kanu, the jailed leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), at the Sokoto Correctional Centre, where he is serving a life sentence.
The visit was described by Otti’s media office as part of a renewed push to secure Kanu’s release.
According to a statement issued by the Governor’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr Ferdinand Ekeoma, he told Kanu: “Remain calm and strong. The process toward securing your freedom is ongoing and will be resolved administratively.”
Governor Otti was accompanied by Abia State’s Attorney‑General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr Ikechukwu Uwanna (SAN), his media aide, and senior officials from Sokoto State’s government. Also present was Kanu’s younger brother, Emmanuel Kanu.
He expressed satisfaction that the Sultan of Sokoto shares his stance on de‑escalating tensions in the region, adding that discussions he initiated over two years ago have been intensified despite the recent conviction.
In response, Kanu was reportedly “all smiles” and in high spirits. He thanked the Governor for the visit, praised the state’s developmental strides, and urged continued good governance.
Supporters of the IPOB leader greeted the visit with optimism. In a Facebook post, Kanu’s lawyer, Aloy Ejimakor, described Otti as “a man of his words” and thanked him for fulfilling his promise.
“May God bless you. And may your august visit to Sokoto today be the first step to ending this undeserved ordeal, sooner than later,” he wrote.
Emmanuel Kanu, in a separate post, said: “Governor Alex Otti and the people of Sokoto have made a unified statement by visiting Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.”
While Otti reaffirmed that efforts to secure Kanu’s release remain active and ongoing, he stated that the matter would be resolved ‘administratively’, leaving the nature and timeline of the envisaged resolution unclear.
