The trial of 36 Military Officers allegedly involved in plotting a coup to overthrow the government of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration began on Friday behind closed doors at the Scorpion Mess in Abuja with Journalists barred from coverage.
According to the statement made available by the Director of Defense Information, Major General Samaila UBA, the defendants arrived at the court at about 8:54 am in an Army Headquarters Garrison bus, followed by a Defense Intelligence Agency detention operations vehicle.
He stated that the inauguration marked a plausible step in discipline reinforcement, accountability and of course commitment of the armed forces to safeguard national integrity and respect for constituted authorities.
“Proceedings of the court will be conducted with the highest standards of fairness, impartiality, as well as the highest and strict adherence to due process, guaranteeing that justice will be served without fear or favor.
“All cases will be addressed within the extant legal frameworks of the military justice system,” he added.
Major General Ina assured that the Defense Headquarters remains resolute in upholding professionalism, discipline, and the rule of law while ensuring that the rights of all personnel are respected and the basic tenets of fair hearing are upheld.
The DHQ had said on January 26 that military officers involved in the plot to overthrow Tinubu would be formally arraigned before a military court martial following the conclusion of the ongoing investigations.
