As at the time of filing in the report, emergency responders involving the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), the Anambra State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), the Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development, the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN), the State Fire Service, security agencies and other government officials is ongoing at the scene to locate and rescue others believed to be trapped in the building.

The three-storey building, located in Amaokpala, a neighbouring community to Oko, collapsed on Sunday night.

The Anambra State Commissioner for Physical Planning, Mr Chijioke Ojukwu, alongside the Commissioners for Works, Mr Okey Ezeobi, and Health, Dr Afam Obidike, visited the scene and assured that the state government would investigate both the immediate and underlying causes of the collapse.

The Head of Operations of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Enugu Operations Office, Mrs. Priscilla Madukwe, who is coordinating the rescue operation, appealed to the public to remain calm, assuring that an official statement would be issued after the exercise.

One of the occupants, who escaped moments before the building came down, told Radio Nigeria that the landlord had earlier issued tenants a notice to vacate the premises to allow for repairs because the structure had developed visible defects.

She alleged, however, that the caretaker, who is now reportedly at large, rented out the rooms to new tenants in January despite the condition of the building.

Another survivor said she was on the third floor when neighbours raised the alarm.
